Defensive coordinator search has begun

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--UNC has already begun an informal search for a defensive coordinator, head football coach, John Bunting, announced on Monday afternoon.

Dave Huxtable, defensive coordinator for the 2003 season--a season in which UNC ranked 116th of 117 teams in total defense--has agreed to relinquish those duties but will remain on the staff as the linebackers coach UNC announced in a press release earlier in the day.

"I have several people in mind," Bunting said. "I have talked with probably three or four candidates. I intend to begin an interview process by phone hopefully, in Chapel Hill or outside of Chapel Hill before the week is out…"

"I do not have a time frame [for a final decision,]" Bunting added. "There is no real urgency. I'd like to have something in place by the second week in January, but I will not do that unless I have the right guy."

According to Bunting, he will be looking for someone with experience as a coordinator who aligns with his thinking regarding fundamentals and techniques. He expects this to be the last of the staff alignments for this year, but how the position coaches could be affected has not yet been defined.

The search will include candidates from college and the NFL. "I just want someone who can come in here, work with my staff, and do a terrific job working with them and coordinating the defense," Bunting said.
