UNC's Latta named ACC Rookie of the Week

Third time in four weeks ROY honors bestowed on a Heel.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina freshman Ivory Latta has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for women's basketball. The honor is the first of the season for Latta and marks the third time in four weeks that a Tar Heel has been selected.

A 5-6 point guard from McConnells, S.C., Latta helped lead the Tar Heels to a 94-40 win over Wofford last Saturday. She scored a game-high 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting in UNC's only game of the week. Latta, the 2003-04 Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year, also had four assists and four steals in 27 minutes of play in the win.

Averaging 12.9 points per game, Latta is tied for the team scoring lead with forward Camille Little, also a freshman. Little has been named ACC Rookie of the Week on two occasions this season. Maryland's Shay Doron is the only other player to have won rookie honors.

This week's ACC Player of the Week selection was Duke's Mistie Bass.

Latta leads the Tar Heels in three-point shooting with 2.1 per game, a figure that ranks fourth in the ACC. She also ranks fourth in the ACC in free throw percentage (.857), fifth in assists (4.3 per game), seventh in steals (2.3 per game) and second in assist-turnover ratio (2.6).

Carolina, 7-1 and ranked 15th in the nation, hosts Western Michigan Wednesday in the team's last home game before the holiday break. Tipoff at Carmichael Auditorium is 7 p.m.
