UCF hires Dave Huxtable

ORLANDO - UCF head football coach George O'Leary announced the hiring of former North Carolina defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Dave Huxtable as linebackers coach Tuesday. Huxtable is the first new hire to O'Leary's staff at UCF and will begin working for UCF Wednesday.

"I enjoyed working with Dave and I appreciate his hard work and passion for Carolina over the past three seasons," said UNC head coach John Bunting. "I know our players learned a great deal from Hux. I wish him and his family success at Central Florida. Obviously, we now have two positions available on our defense staff and I will continue to search for the best possible coaches to fill those vacancies."

Huxtable is George O'Leary's first new hire at UCF. Huxtable and O'Leary coached together at Georgia Tech from 1994-97. While serving as linebackers coach at Georgia Tech from 1992-97, he also served three years as special teams coordinator (1992-94) and defensive coordinator (1996-97) for the Yellow Jackets.

"I'm very happy to have acquired the coaching expertise of Dave Huxtable for my staff at UCF," stated O'Leary. "He's an outstanding coach and teacher and an outstanding recruiter. I'm very fortunate to have worked with him in the past."

"I appreciate everything Coach Bunting has done for me and my family," Huxtable said. "I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and being a part of the Carolina staff. I'd like to thank the defensive players for all the hard work and dedication that they've given me. I wish nothing but the best for Coach Bunting and the UNC football program. I know Coach Bunting is going to get the job done here and it's going to happen fast."

Huxtable and O'Leary reunite after the two coached together at Georgia Tech from 1994-97. While serving as linebackers coach at Georgia Tech from 1992-97, he also served three years as special teams coordinator (1992-94) and defensive coordinator (1996-97) for the Yellow Jackets. He was part of the staff that coached Georgia Tech to a 35-30 win over West Virginia in the 1997 Carquest Bowl under O'Leary.

A veteran of coaching for 24 years, Huxtable served for the last three seasons at the University of North Carolina. He coached the linebackers at UNC for three seasons and also served as the team's defensive coordinator for the final two years of his stint in Chapel Hill, before head coach John Bunting removed him from the position earlier this month after the Tar Heels' 2-10 season (in which the UNC defense allowed 505.2 yards per game, ranking 116th out of 117 Division I-A teams). Huxtable also served as Carolina's special teams coordinator in 2001.

Huxtable came to North Carolina after a year as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Oklahoma State. He has also worked at East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Western Kentucky and Iowa State.

Huxtable has coached two NFL first round picks at linebacker during his career including Robert Jones of East Carolina and Keith Brooking of Georgia Tech.
