National college hoops writer Dan Wetzel, of CBS Sportsline, is traveling through the country to preview a bunch of teams. Joining him is Bret Bearup, of BW3's fame, and pictured above (I coudn't resist using the shot originally published by TheInsidersHoops).
Anyway, Wetzel and Bearup were in Chapel Hill this weekend and Wetzel has published two good stories on the Tar Heels.
"This fall has been a very trying recruiting period," Doherty said. "Just because we have recruited very hard and a lot of the kids we were recruiting have local ties, that makes it tough. So this is probably the most trying recruiting period I have had as a coach.
"A couple things happened. First a few kids are afraid to play here because they don't know if they are good enough, they don't trust themselves. And a lot of people take shots at you because you are very visible so they take some shots at you. Quite often they will say things about you as a program or as a coach and you find yourself having to defend yourself more than I did at Notre Dame."
"It is fun," UNC coach Matt Doherty said. "It is an exciting challenge. It is fun when people tell you you can't do things and it is fun to prove them wrong. I think we have a great opportunity to go out this year and show people we are Carolina, we are good, just because we lost faces in this program we are good.
"I use the Seattle Mariners as an example. They lost Griffey, A-Rod and Randy Johnson and they tied for the best record in the history of baseball."
