Heels edge Pack with late bucket

North Carolina wins 58-57 on LaTangela Atkinson's score with four seconds left.

LaTangela Atkinson dropped in a shot with 3.9 seconds on the clock for a 58-57 North Carolina win over N.C. State.

The thirteenth ranked Heels fell behind by as much as six in the second stanza but rallied as the clock ticked down.

Nanna Rivers made two free throws to pull the Wolfpack ahead 57-56 with 31 seconds left. With the shot clock off, UNC worked the ball inside but Ivory Latta's shot was off and N.C. State's Kendra Bell corralled the rebound with five seconds left. But the Pack player stumbled, sliding on the floor. The call was traveling and the Heels had another chance - and Atkinson made the most of it with a quick bucket.

State hurried the ball down the court for a last season desperation shot that fell short.

Coming off her third ACC Rookie Of The Week award, freshman Camille Little led the Heels with 20 points and five rebounds. Atkinson and Latta each chipped in 13 points.

The Heels also got a stellar defensive effort down the stretch from Latta as well as a huge three pointer to cut the Pack lead down to two.

A horrible shooting night for both squads uglied a competitive game as UNC shot 31% and the Pack 36% from the field.

State was led by Kayla Chones with 19 and Alvie Mendeng chipped in 13. The Pack lost Alvie Mendeng's services when she picked up her fifth foul with eight minutes to go.

The win was the fifth straight for Carolina over the Pack, the third consecutive victory at Reynolds.

State drops to 8-8 (0-3) while UNC improved to 13-1 (3-0). The Heels will travel to another unfriendly local spot to take on Duke next in a Sunday matchup with the top-ranked Devils. The game was originally scheduled for Chapel Hill but the games locations were switched recently.

Note: Thumbs up to three Tar Heels who earned Dean's List honors for the fall semester - senior Carrie Davis and sophomores La'Tangela Atkinson and Jessica Sell.
