Heels moving up for Thompson

The Tar Heels might not have snagged offensive lineman James Thompson from Clemson just yet, but they sure did gain some ground. The Sumter (S.C.) High School product stated that Clemson is still No. 1, but UNC made a good enough impression to garner the No. 2 spot for the 6-5, 310-pounder.

"Oh it puts North Carolina up pretty high," stated Thompson. "I like that I will get playing time and a good education as well."

Despite the fact that weather postponed his trip to Chapel Hill until yesterday morning, Thompson enjoyed his stay but most notably enjoyed the Tar Heels' coaching staff and seemed to connect with offensive line coach Hal Hunter.

"I love the coaching staff especially the offensive line coach," he remarked. "The offensive line coach reminds me of the offensive line coach that I had (in high school). I happen to get along with him well."

What Thompson liked even more than the coaching staff was what they had to say to the three-star player during discussions.

"They talked about the depth chart," Thompson said. "Next year they have a senior right tackle and a senior left tackle. He said I could come in the offense and get about 40 plays a game almost. I would rotate with the tackles and get plenty of playing time probably."

The trip to Chapel Hill was the first of four, possibly five, for Thompson. He plans to visit South Carolina on January 16th, Clemson on January 23rd, and Florida State on January 30th. Thompson will also attempt to make a stop by Raleigh to visit NC State sometime during one of the upcoming weeks.
