Tar Heels left out of poll again

Last week, the USAToday/ESPN Coaches Poll strangely omitted the Tar Heels, and the idle Heels once again were left out of that poll's top twenty-five.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were once again left out of the top twenty-five of the USAToday/ESPN Coaches Poll.   A ranking in the poll is important to the Tar Heels as they are battling ACC contenders, Maryland and Florida State, for the ACC Bowl Championship Series berth in the Orange Bowl on January 2, 2002 in Miami.

North Carolina will have to stay unbeaten to contend for that berth.  If all three teams finish the regular season without a loss, the first tiebreaker for the Orange Bowl bid is each team's record against the other two.

However, North Carolina, Florida State, and Maryland would each be 1-1 against other, which would mean that the team with the highest average rankings in the Associated Press and USAToday/ESPN Coaches Poll would receive the BCS bid.

This week, Maryland was ranked number 16 and Florida State is ranked number 14.  Georgia Tech, also idle, was ranked at number 21, as they were last week.

North Carolina received 103 points in the voting, good for a tie for 26th, with Mississippi  The Tar Heels were 27th last week with 66 points.
