Schmidt changes plans

North Carolina has suffered its first de-commitment of the 2004 recruiting season. Boca Raton offensive lineman Ryan Schmidt has decided to attend Kansas State, his mother Tammy confirmed to Inside Carolina via telephone on Wednesday.

"It didn't have anything to do with UNC," Tammy Schmidt said. "It was the most difficult decision that we have ever had to make. It's just that Ryan felt he was a better fit at Kansas State with everything that was happening. It had nothing to do with the UNC program. It was like, ‘How do you pick between two great programs?' It was very hard to tell them, too; trust me."

Although she declined further comment, she did say she was hesitant to answer the phone earlier for fear it was a member of the UNC coaching staff calling her.
