Heels play exhibition game against Premier Player

The University of North Carolina women's basketball team will play its first exhibition game of the 2001-02 season on Thursday, hosting Premier Players at Carmichael Auditorium.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The University of North Carolina women's basketball team will play its first exhibition game of the 2001-02 season on Thursday, hosting Premier Players at Carmichael Auditorium. Tipoff is 7 p.m. and there is no charge for admission.

Carmichael is a familiar venue for several on the Premier Players roster. Chanel Wright, who played for Carolina from 1996-99, and LaQuanda Barksdale, a Tar Heel from 1998-2001, both will compete for the visiting team, which is coached by Steve Pratt. Barksdale, who led the 2000-01 UNC team in scoring and rebounding, was a first round WNBA pick last April and now plays for the Portland Fire.

Two other 2001 WNBA first-round selections, Coco Miller and Kelly Miller, also will compete for the Premier Players. The Millers enjoyed standout careers at Georgia and played for the Bulldog team that beat UNC in the 2000 NCAA Tournament West Region semifinal game. Coco now plays for the Washington Mystics, Kelly for the Charlotte Sting.

The Premier Players roster also includes Octavia Blue (Miami), Kym Hope (Miami), Meaghan Leahy (Notre Dame), Nicky McCrimmon (Southern California), Lisa Shepherd (Penn State), Trsha Stafford (California) and Wendi Willits (Arkansas). McCrimmon plays for the Los Angeles Sparks.

UNC will play its second exhibition game Saturday at 4 p.m. against the Perik Jumpers, a Basketball Travelers team from Tubbergen, Holland. The Premier Players move on to face Auburn (Nov. 3), FSU (Nov. 6), Florida (Nov. 7), South Florida (Nov. 9), Alabama (Nov. 11) and Miami (Nov. 13).
