The NCAA board of directors decided today to change the 5/8 rule, but the altered guidelines will not affect Carolina's recruiting efforts.
Teams are now allowed a ninth scholarship granted in the Class of 2001 and 2002 combined. However, since the rule held a maximum of five per class, the Tar Heels aren't affected because they are able to sign five in 2002 anyway.
In addition, the board decided not to extend the rule to 2003, so the 5/8 rule will return. UNC has commitments from three players so far from 2002, and are limited to four more total over 2002 and 2003 because of the 13 scholarship limit.
That make any sense?
