Heels invite walk on kicker for 2004

Inside Carolina has learned that Butler's Shawn Lawson of Matthews, N.C., one of the top kickers in the state, will walk on to the UNC football team next fall.

While it appears that Wilmington's Connor Barth will handle the field goal kicking duties in the future, the Tar Heels might have found its next kickoff specialist in Shawn Lawson.

Last year, Carolina employed the services of two senior kicking specialists in Topher Roberts (KO), a walk-on in 2001, and Dan Orner (FG).

Despite an injury that hampered Lawson during his senior season, he still managed an amazing 27 touchbacks in 2003.

"After surgery and several weeks of rehab, Shawn was unsure if any team would even give him a chance until the University of North Carolina came knocking," Butler coach Barry Shuford said in a story on the Bulldogs' heading to play college football.

"Shawn will compete with another freshman for the job and may see time kicking next year for the Tar Heels."

A three-year varsity letterman, Lawson also played soccer.
