Smith Center adopts stricter safety measures

CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina Departments of Public Safety and Athletics have announced the following policies for building and patron safety at men's basketball games and other events at the Dean E. Smith Center:

  • The following items will not be permitted in the arena: backpacks, duffel bags, backpack style/oversize/large purses, computer cases, alcohol, bottles, food, cans, thermoses, coolers, drugs, chains, fireworks, weapons, noise makers, signs, laser pointers and any other items deemed inappropriate by Smith Center personnel.
  • Please leave all items at home or in your vehicle. No items may be checked in at the gate.
  • All visitors and/or their belonginsg are subject to be screened by entry personnel. Please arrive early (doors open 90 minutes prior to the start of an event).
  • Due to increased security, smoking outside entrances B and D at halftime will no longer be allowed. No exit or re-entry on ticket stubs will be allowed.
  • Entrance C will no longer be used as a spectator entrance.
  • The Smith Center will be closed on weekday home basketball games and on weekends to secure the arena for each event.
