2005 Focus: Uche Echefu

He's having a big year. Montrose Christian junior Uche Echefu, a 6-8 native of Nigeria, is beginning to hear from a plethora of interested schools.

Montrose Christian has produced a number of Division I signees in the past few seasons. The Maryland-based powerhouse has also had its fair share of post players like Linas Kleiza (Missouri) and Asrangue Souleymane (Cincinnati). Uche Echefu, a 6-8, 220 pounder is next.

Echefu, a native of Nigeria, is averaging 14 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. "He's a strong, powerful player," Montrose assistant David Adkins said. "He's learning the game and being more of a complete player around the basket. He's got tremendous upside."

Echefu rebounded from a knee injury suffered prior to the start of his sophomore year. He's gotten bigger and bulked up. "He's 6-8 and a good 220. He's really coming. The biggest thing is that he's been playing since 2000. He made a move the other night, and we've been working on feeling the defense. He looked over the inside shoulder, felt the defense high side and pivoted and shot a bank shot."

Echefu, a hard worker in the gym, hasn't been out on the summer circuit so all the interest he's received has come from schools watching him with his high school team. Among the interested parties are Louisville, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Florida State, Kansas, Arizona and Southern Cal.

Its way too early to start matching Echefu with schools, but you can see the kind of programs that are going to keep a watchful eye on him this spring and summer.
