CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--In the final exhibition game before the start of the regular season for the University of North Carolina women's basketball team, freshmen and sophomores led the Tar Heels in a 113-56 win over the Perik Jumpers, a team from Tubbergen, The Netherlands. Carolina opens the season on Friday at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium, hosting a first-round WNIT game against George Mason.
Sophomore Candace Sutton paced UNC Saturday with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field despite playing just 20 minutes. Also scoring in double figures were freshman guard Leah Metcalf (15 points), freshman forward Jenni Laaksonen (15), freshman forward Nikita Bell (14), and sophomore forward Chrystal Baptist (12).
"Our freshman are going to help us a lot," coach Sylvia Hatchell said. "They're going to get better and better as they learn our system."
Metcalf, who was 8-for-10 from the free throw line, had 13 assists to go with just three turnovers, while Baptist and freshman Kenya McBee led Carolina on the boards with nine rebounds each. Junior guard Coretta Brown had nine points, nine assists and six rebounds.
The Tar Heels shot 49.4 percent from the field, compared with 27.9 by the Jumpers, who were led by forward Kinesha Harden's 17 points and by seven rebounds from center Brandi Green. UNC led 57-30 at the half.
