National interest pouring in for Cameron

One of the top juniors in the country re-opened his recruitment a few weeks ago. We spoke with Leeds High School coach Mike Turner for some insight into Joey Cameron's situation.

Joey Cameron, a member of our pre-season Top 25, is averaging 24 points, 17 rebounds and 8 blocks. Cameron, a standout junior power forward who attends the same high school that Charles Barkley once laced them up at, re-opened his recruitment earlier this month.

The 6-9 Leeds High junior committed to Clemson in the fall but withdrew the commitment according to his high school coach.

"Basically, and this is one thing we told Coach Oliver Purnell, is that they are definitely in the Top 10 on his list," Leeds coach Mike Turner said. "However, at this point, he felt it best to re-open his recruitment. He got there on his unofficial visit and was excited. He might have made a rushed decision. His eyes got big. He's from a real small town and it was similar to where he grew up.

"The ACC attracted Joey and coach is trying to resurrect a program. Of course you want to go play where the players are at. However, having an opportunity to reflect on some things, he and his mother both felt it was best to withdraw the commitment. It was nothing against the staff and they still have Clemson in the hunt."

The list of prospective suitors is long. Start with the obvious: Clemson, Alabama, Auburn and UAB are in the mix. St. John's, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, North Carolina, LSU, Florida and Kentucky have called on him. "It's been incredible in terms of response once [colleges] realized that he de-committed."

Turner said that it's likely for Cameron to go through the summer, have an opportunity to trim his list and then make some official visits. The coach said they're trying to focus the search to 10 schools at this point.
