Target 2005: Joe Cox

With this coming season being starter Darian Durant's last in Chapel Hill, it is obvious that the quarterback situation in Chapel Hill will be up in the air after 2004. With that said, the Tar Heels coaching staff hopes to sign at least one quarterback and have plenty on their radar. Perhaps none of the UNC targets possesses a better set of intangibles than Joe Cox of Charlotte (N.C.) Independence.

Cox, who is a proven leader and proven winner, as well as the heir apparent to All-American Chris Leak, recently kick-started his recruiting season by attending Junior Day at Chapel Hill. The 6-0, 175-pounder signal caller enjoyed his stay and the activities of the day.

"It went very well," remarked Cox. "We got to tour the memorabilia room that had all the jerseys and awards. We got to watch the Carolina-Maryland basketball game. At half time we got taken across the floor underneath the facility where we got to meet all the assistant coaches, hear a speech from Coach [John] Bunting and have some refreshments."

Although there are no offers on the table yet, Cox is being recruited by numerous ACC schools including: Duke, North Carolina, NC State, Wake Forest and Maryland. Cox doesn't have a leader but likes UNC and lists them along with Duke and NC State as his three favorites.

"North Carolina is one of my favorite options and it is definitely in my top three," stated Cox. "I think they have a strong program that it is going to be getting better year after year with their coaching staff."

Cox plans to attend a few camps this summer, but hasn't set up a schedule. Once his senior season starts, Cox will put his recruitment on the backburner and focus on leading Independence to their fifth-straight 4A State Championship.

"I'm definitely just not even going to worry about it through my senior year," Cox said. "I'm just going to let things take care of itself and I'm going to decide after my senior season."
