Despite reports from his coach, Keith Butler admitted that Matt Doherty backed off because of his grades.
The 7-footer, who transferred from North Cambridge Catholic (Mass.) to Philadelphia Celestial Prep (Pa.) this season to try and raise his GPA so that he is eligible his freshman season in college, said the UNC staff called him last week.
"They told me that due to academics, they wouldn't be able to accept me," Butler said.
The big man didn't seem overly upset with the phone call from Doherty and said he wasn't really leaning towards choosing the Tar Heels, anyway.
A decision is expected from Butler as soon as this afternoon and he's down to a pair of schools: Temple and Cincinnati.
"It's a pretty tough decision," he said. "I like them both."
