Target 2005: Whitman Reese

DURHAM, N.C. – Fullback Whitman Reese is the sleeper among the wealth of talent at Southern Durham.

However recruiting interest is growing as North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Duke, Stanford and Virginia have contacted him.

"I'm academic-based," Reese said. "Right now I've got about a 3.6 G.P.A, so I was looking at Harvard, Yale and Duke. But anybody that offers, I would be willing to go there."

Reese is 5-foot-9, 180 pounds, and has 4.4-speed in the 40-yard dash, Southern coach Gordon Walters said. He also benches 250 pounds and squats 360. He averaged 9.9 yards per carry last year. He also plays quarterback.

Reese has not garnered too much attention until now, because he lined up behind Pierre Banks, who originally signed with Ole Miss, and is now a freshman at the Air Force Academy.

"So this is going to be his year to shine," Walters said. "He's got the best feet and hips of anyone I've ever coached. His mobility and his ability to change direction in a smooth manner a far beyond those at the high school level."
