Echoing their rough start to last season, Maryland began the season with an upset loss. The highly-ranked Terps were knocked off by unranked Arizona, 71-67, at Madison Square Garden.
Juan Dixon led the way with 21 points and five assists, but his teammates were unable to hit the long range shot. Maryland, minus Dixon, was 2-17 on three point attempts.
Washington Post - "Tonight, they lost to an unranked team with nine scholarship players, only two of whom played more than 175 minutes last season. The Terrapins shot poorly throughout, were impatient running their offense and were bullied on the boards by smaller players at nearly every position." (No. 2 Terps Edged In Season Opener)
Baltimore Sun - "The Maryland Terrapins had the experience, the gaudy No. 2 ranking and the anticipation that come with starting anew after going to their first Final Four. And none of it mattered last night at Madison Square Garden, where the unranked Arizona Wildcats, full of youth and inexperience, refused to blink and gave the Terps a lesson to think about in the season opener for both teams."
