Target 2005: Marques Slocum

Offensive lineman Marques Slocum (6-6, 335, 5.0) of Philadelphia (Penn.) St. John Neumann has 12 scholarship offers and remains very open. "I'm evaluating everybody," said Slocum.

"I'm looking at depth charts and everybody is open. I'd like to come in and play. I don't like to sit on the bench. I also want to go where they compete in bowl games. I'll have a top 10 by the middle of the season and a top five by the end. I'll take my trips and commit right before Signing Day."

Marques favors Virginia slightly over Maryland, Syracuse, Boston College, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. All have offered except the Tar Heels. He also has offers from LSU, Michigan St, West Virginia, Tennessee, Connecticut, Wisconsin and Michigan.

"Virginia is recruiting me the hardest. They send a lot of mail. I just got a package from them with a note from every coach. It's also a beautiful campus and I loved the people there. They have a real good grad rate for African-Americans. It's 87% and it's important for me to have something to fall back on."

The two schools that Marques grew up watching were Michigan and Florida St. "My name starts with an M and when I was a kid I saw that big huge M on TV and liked it, so I started watching them. My parents don't have a favorite school, but my mom wants me to stay close. But I'll go where I want to go.

"My dad lives in Forestville (MD) -- which is only like two miles from the Maryland campus. I like that area a lot. It's a good neighborhood and there are a whole lotta girls down there. It's a fun place."

Marques plans to attend the May 15 Nike camp at Penn St, and he'll also attend summer camps at North Carolina and USC. "My coach knows the new RB coach at USC (Todd McNair) and his wife has family in Los Angeles and he'll be going there this summer and I'll go with them.

"The North Carolina coaches are coming to my school to meet my coach on Tues (Apr 27) and hopefully they will offer. I'll probably go to their camp this summer."

Marques finished his JR season with 75 tackles and nine sacks. He benches 315, squats 500 and has a VJ of 23.

"I can pull great and I'm great at the pass rush. I play with a fire. I go out there and just do my thing. I want to improve my quickness and get off the ball faster. I also want to get to the play quicker and improve my stamina."
