UNC-Duke Game Notes

News and Notes from the UNC-Duke game

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina Tar Heels used a 21-point third quarter to pull away from arch rival Duke 52-17 and climbed one win closer to a bowl game for the first time in three years.

In the process the Tar Heels (6-5, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) sent the Blue Devils (0-10, 0-7) to their 22nd consecutive loss and surpassed the 50-point mark against their neighbors for the second straight year.

Here are some game notes from UNC's victory.

*Carolina has beaten Duke 12 straight times – the longest stretch in the 113-year-old series - dating back to 1990. The last time Duke beat the Tar Heels was in 1989 when Steve Spurrier was the Devils' head coach. That game is also well remembered because after Duke's 41-0 thrashing of the Heels in Kenan Stadium they posed for a team photo beneath the scoreboard at Kenan.

*With its sixth victory of the season, Carolina is assured it won't have a losing season. In fact, the Tar Heels have had just one losing season since 1989. Their worst records in that stretch: 6-5 in 2000, 6-4-1 in 1990, 7-5 in 1998 and this season's 6-5. UNC hosts SMU in the regular season finale on Dec. 1 in a makeup game from the Sept. 11 tragedies.

*If Duke loses at Clemson on Dec. 1 the Blue Devils will finish winless in the ACC for the fifth time in the last ten years.

*UNC's 35-point margin ranks as the eighth largest in the series for the Heels. Carolina's previous 10 largest margins if victory against the Blue Devils: 1892 (24-0), 1894 (28-0), 1925 (41-0), 1929 (48-7), 1959 (50-0), 1971 (38-0), 1991 (47-14), 1997 (50-14), 1999 (38-0), 2000 (59-21).

*Kory Bailey's five receptions give him 135 for his career.

*Curry, UNC's all-time leader in total yards, now has 6,078 for his career.

*Curry's 11 completions gives him 337 for his career.

*Curry passed Jason Stanicek to become UNC's all-time leader in passing yards with  4,871. He had 217 yards on Saturday.

*Curry's three TD passes gives him 27 for his career, good for fourth place in school history. He trails just Chris Keldorf (35), Matt Kupec (33) and Scott Stankavage (30).

*Curry's touchdown run gave him 13 for his career, a school record.

*After rushing for just 67 yards on 51 attempts in their last two games, the Tar Heels chewed up 192 yards on 39 carries against the Devils.

*In his last conference game ever, Ronald Curry completed 11 of 19 passes for 217 yards and three scores. He also ran the ball 11 for 29 yards, including a nifty 11-yard TD run.

*UNC defensive ends coach James Webster cut his hand Saturday morning when he slammed his hand down on a drinking glass when speaking during a team meeting and was taken to intensive care at the UNC hospital. Reports are his okay but will stay over night for observations.

*Duke called time out with one second left in the game and the ball at UNC's 29 yard line to run another play. As expected, the crowd booed.

*UNC freshman Jacque Lewis signed signed a few autographs after the game and posed for a photo. He even stopped and gave a young boy the tape from his wrist.
