In addition to UNC, Sawyer is looking at Auburn, Arkansas, Notre Dame, and UCLA. The Tar Heels are his only offer as of early May.
According to his coach, Sawyer's game is based on speed.
"Last year was E.K.'s first year as a starter for us," Godby coach Shelton Crews said. "He would occasionally lose contact with the receiver, but he has excellent closing speed that allows him to break up pass plays. He runs the second leg on the track 4x100 relay race. He is the kind of guy where his second 50 yards is faster than the first 50 yards."
Sawyer said he is looking for a school where he can get a quality education and get football exposure at the same time. He would like to major in architecture.
UNC assistant coach Gunter Brewer is recruiting Godby High School for the Tar Heels.
"North Carolina and Coach Brewer do an excellent job recruiting our school," Crews said. "He calls me at least once per week to keep in touch. I think he does that with all the schools that he is responsible for. Coach Brewer is supposed to bring Coach [John] Bunting we here this month. I really like Coach Bunting. He is as nice a person as you would ever want to meet. I'm sure that he can get tough, too, but he has always treated Godby high School and its players well. We have a pipeline forming here at Godby with the triangle area. One of our running backs, Reggie Davis, is currently at North Carolina State. Next year we'll have two outstanding defensive backs at Godby as well"
