Target 2005: Rico McCoy

When the Tar Heels' coaching staff extended an offer to Washington (D.C.) St. John's Episcopal linebacker Rico McCoy, they were doing more than just trying to land one of the top linebackers in the nation, they were also trying to bring the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder closer to his family.

"The campus is real close to a lot of family I have out there in North Carolina," stated McCoy. "And I know they are trying to build back the program down there. It's cool. I'm happy I got the offer from them."

Okay, maybe that wasn't exactly what Coach John Bunting envisioned while signing the scholarship offer, but it most certainly helps their cause as McCoy's dad grew up 20 miles from campus and considers the Tar Heels his "hometown team."

Despite his family's proximity to Chapel Hill, McCoy has never stepped foot on campus, though is strongly considering doing so in the near future.

"I have never been on their campus, but I might go there over the summer just to visit," remarked McCoy, who plans to skip the camping scene this summer.

McCoy, who besides the Heels has offers from Boston College, Connecticut, Miami, Maryland, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse, currently doesn't claim a leader, but admits he is only considering his offering schools.

During his junior campaign, McCoy racked up 120 tackles and five sacks on his way to earning All-Conference honors.
