In-state DE commits to Carolina

North Carolina received its fifth 2005 football commitment on Tuesday, Inside Carolina has learned. Roanoke Rapids defensive end Darrius Massenburg, 6-foot-4, 246 pounds, committed while at camp his high school coach Tim Bennett said.

"He did commit to Carolina," Bennett said. "He got an offer last week FedEx'd to him. That's about all I know. I haven't had a chance to talk to him."

Massenburg, who runs a 4.7 40 and also plays basketball, made 104 tackles as a junior and recorded 103 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 3 fumble recoveries as a sophomore -- leading his team in tackles in both seasons.

"Darrius has played out of position for us; he played middle linebacker," Bennett said. "But he's being recruited to play defensive end.

"He's athletically so much better than his opponents, and he has a great feel for the game. He has a knack to figuring offensive schemes. He's just scratching the surface and his best football days are ahead of him."

Massenburg is close friends with UNC's 2004 signee Kentwan Balmer. To read about their friendship, click here.
