Peppers and Sims first team All-ACC

Julius Peppers and Ryan Sims earned first team All-ACC honors; David Thornton and Michael Waddell earn second team honors.

Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- University of North Carolina defensive players Julius Peppers and Ryan Sims were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference first team, the conference announced today. Peppers, a defensive end who has 58 tackles this year, inlcuding 18 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks, was the only unanimous selection selection among the 25 first-team defensive or offensive players. Peppers also was a first-team all-conference selection a year ago.

Sims, a defensive tackle from Spartanburg, S.C., earned first-team honors for the first time in his four-year career. With one game remaining, Sims has 50 tackles this season, including seven tackles for loss and four sacks.

Linebacker David Thornton and defensive back Michael Waddell were second-team All-ACC selections. It is the first honor for either player. Thornton was one of Carolina's top defensive players this season. A former walk-on who became a starter this year, he is tied for the team lead with 120 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Waddell has started all 11 games at cornerback and has 50 tackles and 13 pass break ups. He is fourth in the league in pass break ups.

Center Adam Metts and place-kicker Jeff Reed were honorable-mention All-ACC.
