Felton leads Latta to season opening win

DILLON, S.C. -- "Typical Raymond," commented Coach Stephen Smith of Latta High School when asked about Latta's opening game versus Mullins H.S. (SC) on Tuesday night.

Played at nearby Dillon gym in order to accommodate the crowd that was present to see the Latta star and University of North Carolina signee, Raymond Felton made the extraordinary look normal. Latta capitalized on a 53-31 halftime lead, defeating Mullins, 86-72.

Even though Latta's starters were pulled at the end of the 3rd quarter, the game was already decided, fueled by future UNC guard Felton's 30 points in 24 minutes of play. The senior superstar was 10-14 shooting from the field, including 5-7 from both three-point and two-point range and 5-6 from the free-throw line.

The margin of defeat was due to Latta's zone press and 3/4-court trap, leading to four steals and three dunks by Felton. Predictably, Raymond was double-teamed for much of the evening yet still managed to lead the offensive break and control the tempo of the game, according to Coach Smith. He made 11 assists to only three turnovers despite defensive pressure designed specifically to contain him.

Highlights included Felton making a fall-away three pointer from 23 feet, falling "flat on his back" and bringing the large high school crowd to its feet, Smith commented.

"Typical Raymond"—indeed!
