Nicholson begins to trim list

After stepping back from the recruiting limelight a bit, Mt. Tabor linebacker Derek Nicholson has started to narrow his choices, though many remain.

Nicholson, the top ranked linebacker in the state, lists Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Michigan, Georgia, Clemson, UNC, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Virginia.

"They are all about even right now," Nicholson told Inside Carolina on Wednesday. "Any one of those teams could be in my final five. I don't really have a leader other than those 11. I plan to narrow my list down to five teams by August so that I can set up my official visits. I'd like to take my visits sometime during the season."

Nicholson comes from an ACC family as his father played for North Carolina (mom also went to UNC) and his brother currently plays for Florida State. However, he said his family is really not trying to influence him.

"My brother just said to take my time and it will all take care of itself," Nicholson said. "We went through recruiting with A.J. so we pretty much know what to expect."

Nicholson had considered attending a camp this summer, but has since changed his mind.
