UNC-SMU Game Notes

CHAPEL HILL – For the first time since 1998, the North Carolina Tar Heels will be a part of college football's postseason.

With the 19-10 victory over Southern Methodist, Carolina improved to 7-5 on the season and accepted an invitation to play in the Peach Bowl on New Year's Eve in Atlanta. Here is a look at the game notes from UNC's win.

*Carolina's last bowl game was a 20-13 victory over San Diego State in the Las Vegas Bowl in 1998 to finish the season 7-5.

*The Heels are 11-12 all-time in bowl games. They were 2-0 underneath Carl Torbush (although one victory was three weeks after Mack Brown left). Other coach's bowl records: Brown (3-2), Dick Crum (4-2), Bill Dooley (1-5), Jim Hickey (1-0) and Carl Snavely (0-3).

*UNC has appeared in the Peach Bowl a total of four times, going 1-3 in those games. UNC Beat Mississippi State in the 1993 Peach Bowl for the 1992 regular season and lost to Arizona State (1970), Kentucky (1976) and Florida State (1983).

*Today's game was the first UNC football December game in Kenan Stadium since 1961 when UNC defeated Virginia 24-0. This was Carolina's first regular season December game since 1972 when the Tar Heels beat Florida 28-24 in Jacksonville, Fla. to finish the regular season 10-1. That UNC club went to the Sun Bowl.

*With 116 yards passing and 42 rushing, Ronald Curry finishes with 6,236 total yards in his career, which is tops in school history. (Note: Bowl stats are not included in career stats).

*Curry finishes his UNC career as the school's leading passer with 4,987 yards.

*Curry finishes as the school's all-time leader in rushing TD's for a quarterback with 13. He also ended up with 1,249 rushing yards, which is first all-time at UNC.

*Curry's 28 TD passes puts him at fourth all-time at Carolina.

*Kory Bailey finishes his career with 139 receptions after hauling in four passes on Saturday. Bailey trails Na Brown (165), Corey Holliday (155) and Leon Johnson (151) on the school's all-time list.

*Julius Peppers's one sack on Saturday concludes his UNC career with 30.5 sacks which is second all-time in Tar Heel history.

*With 19 points scored and 10 allowed on the season, the Tar Heels average game score is 26.8 to 19.1

*In UNC's seven wins the average score is 31.6 to 13.3. In the five losses the average score is 33.6 to 20.
