The North Carolina Tar Heels used a 14-2 run to close an 83-77 victory over Georgia Tech and in the process ended a three-game losing streak to open the season and four-game streak overall.
With the victory UNC is now 1-3 overall but 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Yellow Jackets fell to 3-4 and 0-1.
Here are some notes from Sunday's triumph.
*With the win UNC avoided losing a fifth straight home game for the first time in school history.
*Before Sunday's win, UNC had lost four straight home games three times in school history (1930, 1943-44). The streak that just ended began with a 95-81 loss to Duke last March.
*Through Carolina's first three games the Tar Heels averaged shooting 35.3% from the floor. On Sunday the Heels shot 50.9% (27-53) and are now at 38.8% for the season.
*Before the win UNC had shot just 23.3% 17-73 from 3-point range in its three losses combined but made 11 of 23 attempts from beyond the arc on Sunday. Heading into the game Capel was just 2-22 on the season even though he shot at 40.2% last year. On Sunday he made just 1-4 3-pointers.
*With 18 points on Sunday, Capel passed Brian Reese on the all-time scoring list at UNC and now ranks 44th with 1,118 points . He trails Jeff McInnis, who had 1,128 points in his career.
*Capel had nine rebounds for the second straight game after snaring 11 in each of the first two contests. He averages 10 per game.
*Kris Lang's 13 rebounds were a career high.
*Brian Morrison's 21 points was a career high.
*Capel and Lang are part of an elite group of four-year starters at UINC. The others before this season: Phil Ford (1975-78), Mike O'Koren (1976-80), Sam Perkins (1980-84), Brad Daugherty (1982-86), Kenny Smith (1983-87), Ademola Okulaja (1995-99).
*Freshman Jawad Williams displayed his abilities with the ball by handing out five assists. He also scored nine points in easily his best game of the year. If Williams cracks the starting lineup along with Scott and Manuel this season it will be the first time in UNC history that three freshmen had started the same game.
*Through four games UNC has had four different leading scorers. Jason Capel led the Heels in the opening loss to Hampton with 17 points. Melvin Scott's 15 points led the Heels in the loss to Davidson. Kris Lang poured in a career-high 27 points in a loss to Indiana and of course Morrison's effort against on Sunday.
*UNC has now beaten the Yellow Jackets eight consecutive times and lead the overall series 52-14.
*As reported in the Des Moines Register on Nov. 16, UNC leads the ACC in graduation rate at 76.9% during the time period from 1993-2000. Next is Duke at 75.1% followed by Virginia (71.1%), Wake Forest (49.1), Georgia Tech (45.9%), Florida State (38.3%), Clemson (29.7%), N.C. State (28.3%) and Maryland (22.7%).
*Carolina had 14 former players on NBA rosters on opening day. Those players' salaries total 68 years for $373,380,000. That is an average of 4.9 years at $5.49 million per year per player.
