Thompson will wait

A published report stating that Maryville, Tenn. quarterback Cade Thompson planned to commit to UNC today following a visit to Clemson was premature, according to his father.

The race is on for North Carolina to land its first quarterback of the 2005 recruiting season, with the prospect of the day seeming to come and go. The latest is Cade Thompson, a previous unknown out of Maryville, Tenn.

Thompson, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds, returned from a visit to Clemson Thursday night and did not commit to UNC, as had been speculated. He spent the night with a friend and attempts to reach him for comment were unsuccessful.

However his father Wayne did speak with Inside Carolina to provide an update.

"I don't think he is quite ready to commit just yet," Thompson said. "He had a great visit [to Carolina]. I thought he did well at the camp and the coaches were impressed with him. But that's about it."

When asked why he thought his son had flown under the recruiting radar to this point, Wayne Thompson said he had no idea. But he went on to say that he is glad Cade had not gotten attention of some of the other recruits.

"We're kind of glad of that," Thompson said. "It reduces the hype and some of the calls."
