Heels in lead for Hughes

North Carolina welcomed approximately 40-50 players this past weekend for its Academic Day. Many of the recruits were rising juniors and sophomores, but rising senior offensive lineman Kevin Hughes also made the trip.

"It was an awesome trip," Hughes said upon his return. "It made a great impression on me and my family. Coming out of the trip I'd have to say that Carolina is at the very top."

Hughes, a 6-3, 260-pound lineman from Allendale (N.J.) Northern Highlands Regional, said that while he loved his visit, he did not commit.

"I still want to look around some," he said. "I will be going to Pittsburgh on an unofficial visit before school starts. I also would like to take a couple of official visits and perhaps commit sometime during the year. I want to make sure that I take the opportunity to see as many places as I can before committing.

"If Carolina were to tell me that they were running out of scholarships or something then I would probably commit go ahead and commit there."

Hughes has an offer from Pittsburgh and is being recruited by several other teams including Rutgers and Michigan State.

"Coach Webster is my primary recruiter from North Carolina," Hughes said. "He is a real great guy. He was very respectful to me and my family. I really liked Coach Bunting and also Coach Hunter.

"Coach Hunter gave a presentation to all the offensive line recruits -- about eight recruits -- and told us that in order to be a good offensive lineman you had to really enjoy playing on the line. I liked what he had to say."
