Felton puts up big all-around stats in Latta win

12-4-01 Latta HS vs. Marion HS

Final Score: LHS 88 – MHS 75

Marion, SC –Tuesday night was a family affair for Raymond Felton.

He stripped the ball from his first cousin and opponent, Kalil Felton, and slammed home a reverse dunk. Kalil was the high scorer for 3A Marion High School (0-2) with 27 points (22 points in the second half), but 1A Latta High School (3-1) won 88 – 75 after building up a comfortable 22-point halftime lead.

Scoring 23 points on 8-15 shooting (53%), Raymond hit 4-7 from three point range and 4-8 on shots inside the arc. Just as important as his own offensive contributions, Raymond set up his teammates continually, finding the open man for 11 assists. For the season, Felton is averaging a superb 9.3 assists per game.

Raymond had several rim-rattling jams against Marion, several of them following his four steals for the evening. One crowd-pleasing dunk, however, came off of a half-court set offense. On the baseline, Felton faked right, went left and down the baseline for a thundering dunk through traffic.

Felton's stat line against Marion included eight boards in 29 minutes, along with one block and four steals.

Latta High School travels to Dillon High School on Friday night, one of the few teams that defeated Latta last year, during a Christmas tournament. Coach Stephen Smith of Latta foresees another very competitive matchup this year as Dillon is coming off of a 47-point victory.

From his senior guard Felton, Smith expects "serious leadership" against Dillon with Raymond setting the pace and controlling the tempo of the game. According to Smith, the game "will not be decided early like last night." Coach Smith's strategy will be "to go after it early" against the athletic Dillon squad.
