Cota makes European debut

After two weeks of practice former Tar Heel Ed Cota ('00) made his overseas debut last night with Telindus Oostende of Belgium.

Cota started at point guard, played 30 minutes, scored 6 points (3-8 FG, 0-3 3-pt. FG) and had 4 assists with 5 turnovers in an 86-75 loss to Scavolini Pesaro (Italy-A1) in Euroleague Group D competition. Oostende is now 0-7 on the Euroleague season.

Cota will play his first game in the Belgium League (where Oostende has a record of 6-1) on Saturday (12/8).

Former ACC guards Donald Hand (Bree) of Virginia and Robert O'Kelley of Wake Forest (Hasselt) also play in Belgium, so some old rivalries will be renewed as Ed works on his game and tries to get the attention of the NBA.

Another former Tar Heel floor general, Derrick Phelps, had a big game last night in Euroleague Group A play.

Phelps posted 24 points, 17 in the fourth quarter, on 8-9 shooting (2-2 3pt) and added five assists in Alba Berlin's 99-87 win over Charleroi (Belgium).
