Heels land Tennessee QB

North Carolina's tenth known football commitment is its first quarterback of the 2005 recruiting season. Cade Thompson, of Maryville, Tenn., has verbally accepted a scholarship, Inside Carolina has learned.

"I talked with Coach [Gunter] Brewer and he said that Cade had committed," Maryville coach George Quarles said. "Cade was deciding between Clemson and North Carolina and really liked North Carolina. We are happy for him and will support him as a Tar Heel."

Cade Thompson, 6-foot-4, 180 pounds, was widely unknown until he impressed UNC coaches while at their two-day camp last month.

Thompson 40-time is reported at 4.7 seconds.

He chose the the Tar Heels over Clemson, the only other school that offered. Thompson was also reportedly considering Alabama, Mississippi State and Tennessee.

"We are really happy with his decision," Thompson's mom, Janet, said. "We talked it over but it was his decision. The visit to North Carolina went great. It was a beautiful campus and the coaches were wonderful. It's all good."

Thompson has started every game over the last two season for the Rebels, leading them to a 28-1 mark and the 4A state title in 2002.

He is the third prospect to declare for Carolina in the past 10 days.
