Now departing RDU
ESPN's Melanie Jackson has an interesting read on the situations at State and Duke with players leaving, Hot topic: Transfers in the Triangle. Jackson tosses some of the blame back at the players, instead of the typical, 'gee what's wrong in their program'.
If you didn't see, recently both teams lost a pair of players - Duke lost sophomores Rometra Craig and Crystal White and Pack lost co-captain Ivy Gardner and reserve Daphne Hutcherson. Gardner had started some for the Pack and Craig, daughter of NFL great Roger Craig and White were part of the Devils super '00 recruiting class.
All four cases seem to be issues over playing time but Craig and White appear to have more concern with another great Duke class coming in. Their departures leave Duke with eight players on the roster - three others unexpectedly left before the season. Sure most teams don't go much further than an eight player rotation - but eight means in a blowout, you've still got two starters in the game. Duke is darn good, no doubt about it - but this will cost them a game or two down the stretch - be it fatigue or injury.
Say what you will but those mega-blockbluster recruiting classes never seem to stick together. We are always amazed when a pack of these elite kids sign up at a school and all expect to get 30 minutes. Just not gonna happen folks.
Sell goes off
UNC signee Jessica Sell has made Coach Hatchell look really smart.
In an overtime win over the #6 team in the state, Sell had 30 points, 17 rebounds, eight assists, five steals and four blocks and drew enough fouls to foul out two players according to the Dominion Post.
Yikes. Did we mention down a bucket with 25 seconds left in regulation she stole the ball at midcourt and scored to go to OT?
Definitely read this article on the show she put on, Big night vs. MHS hardly best for Sell. The line we love most from the article is this, "She did what she wanted to, whenever she wanted to do it, and at the same time kept her teammates involved to the point where they actually won the game for the Huskies."
And that sport fans is what great players do. No wonder North Marion is 3-0 and has people believing this team is going to go far.
Update: Coach Sell popped us an email to tell us that game isn't the only one she's gone off in:
- Game one, 32 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists
- Game two, 37 points, 13 rebounds, 8 assists
UNC signee LaTangela Atkinson has been selected a pre-season All-American by iHigh.com.
UNC '03 target Mary Hall McArver is on track to be playing soon according to the Gaston Gazette, On the rebound.
The story also reports what we've told you all along, UNC has offered her a scholarship. So has NC State and Virginia Tech is getting in on the Forestview star as well.
We still hear UNC is the team to beat.
UNC '03 target Camille Little has lead W-S Carver to a 7-0 record and #1 ranking in the 3-A statewide poll. Between Little and Wake-bound Porsche Jones, the Yellowjackets look ready to repeat as state champions.
The Heels are looking in the Queen city for another PG. 5-11 Na'keisha Anthony from Myers Park down in Charlotte has been making the sports page since being a precocious frosh. UNC, State and Duke are all checking in Anthony, a Street & Smith All-America HM (2001) and 2nd All-State.
