Tar Heel Trio Earns ACC Player Of The Week Honors

A trio of North Carolina football players earned Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in Carolina's 34-13 victory over Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Senior tailback Jacque Lewis was named the offensive back of the week, sophomore linebacker Fred Sparkman was named defensive line player of the week and sophomore Jacoby Watkins earned defensive back of the week honors.

Lewis rushed for a career-high 161 yards and two touchdowns in the Tar Heels' 34-13 victory over Georgia Tech Saturday. After rushing for 58 yards in the first half, the Elizabeth City, N.C., senior, exploded for 103 yards on nine carries in the second half, scoring both touchdowns in the third quarter.

A first-year starter at middle linebacker, Sparkman led the Tar Heel defensive effort with 13 tackles, including six primary stops and seven assists, in Saturday's 34-13 win over Georgia Tech. The Columbia, Tenn., sophomore also had a 9-yard interception return and broke up another pass in the victory.

Watkins had five tackles, broke up two passes and picked off two passes in Saturday's 34-13 win over Georgia Tech. Watkins' interception in the second quarter was the first interception for the Tar Heels in 12 games, dating back to last year's Wisconsin game. Later, the Laurinburg, N.C., sophomore picked off his second pass of the game in the fourth quarter in the end zone, negating a Yellow Jacket scoring drive.
