UNC Has Surprise Visitor

It's been quite a while since the name Marquis Melvin surfaced. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior defensive back from Whiteville, N.C. has been committed to Duke for some time now.

And while it was no secret he grew up a Carolina fan, he made his decision early to join the Blue Devils while many wondered why the Tar Heels didn't express more interest. His opposing coaches have certainly sung his praises, but an offer from UNC never came.

Marquis Melvin, who runs a reported 4.45-second time over 40 yards, was in Chapel Hill this past weekend and took in the UNC-Georgia Tech game.

"I basically wanted to just see the game," Melvin told Inside Carolina from his home on Monday. "I'm still committed to Duke. I enjoyed the game though. North Carolina really whipped Georgia Tech."

Along with Carolina, Melvin is also still being recruited by Clemson.

"I hurt my shoulder the second game of the season and just started playing again last week," he said. "We are traveling to Charlotte to play this Thursday."

Melvin plays cornerback and wide receiver for Whiteville.

"I think I like playing defense a little better," he said, "because that is where I think I'll play in college."

Some project Melvin to move to safety or perhaps even move to linebacker in college.
