12-17-01 Latta HS vs. Scotts Branch HS
Final Score: LHS 114 – SBHS 65
LATTA, S.C. – You knew it was coming. Raymond Felton had flirted with a triple-double in five of this year's nine games before notching 30 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists last night. Latta High School's senior-laden Vikings defeated Scotts Branch HS (SC) 114-65.
Even though Latta has ten seniors on this year's team, they were understandably wary of their opponent. Scotts Branch had defeated Latta at the buzzer two out of the last three years (1999 and 2000), both times in the the first round of the South Carolina High School Final Four.
But that was during Raymond's freshman and sophomore years. With Felton's emergence as the nation's premier high school point guard, Latta has taken the last two in a row from Scotts Branch.
Latta is now 8-1 with their only loss coming in an early season game against Socastee High School.
Felton played only 22 minutes in last night's blowout and didn't even enter the game in the fourth quarter. In addition to his triple double, with 30 points on 11-17 shooting, Felton committed only two turnovers while blocking three shots and stealing the ball twice.
On the season through 9 games, Raymond is averaging 26.8 points, 8.6 assists, 9.2 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 3.8 steals -- almost averaging a triple double for the year so far!
In one outstanding play last night, according to Latta head coach Stephen Smith, Raymond took the inbounds pass and headed downcourt. Seeing that only one man stood between him and the basket, Felton beat his man and, with his head near the rim, threw down an awesome two-handed flush dunk.
Latta's Marrell Sutton, a senior, led all scorers with 31 points -- the 3rd time in three games that he has been high scorer. Of Sutton, Coach Smith says, "Sutton was the beneficiary of Raymond's assists. Felton found Sutton on the baseline with creative assists all night. My hope is that Sutton can get some looks from colleges. He's college material and I hope somebody can take a look at him." Sutton's opportunity is coming soon at the Beach Ball Classic over the holidays.
