Heels still in race for Nicholson

Winston-Salem linebacker Derek Nicholson has plenty of offers to choose from, but don't look for him to make a decision or even determine his five official visits soon.

"I'll probably wait until after the season to decide which teams I'll visit," Derek Nicholson said on Tuesday.

"I'd say that [Carolina] has a good chance for an official visit. I'm pretty sure that I am coming to the Miami/UNC game on an unofficial visit. Besides that I'd like to take unofficial visits to Florida State, Tennessee, and maybe Notre Dame."

Although Nicholson, the son of former UNC defensive standout Darrell Nicholson and younger brother of FSU linebacker A.J. Nicholson, said he was not in town for Saturday's win over the Wolfpack, the game did make an impression on him.

"It was a huge win for them," Nicholson said. "It showed that they are improving and getting a winning mentality. Those are the types of things that I am looking for out of North Carolina."

UNC co-defensive coordinator Marvin Sanders is Nicholson's primary recruiter, while John Bunting talks to him when he can.

"All the schools are recruiting me hard," he said. "I don't think there is one particular school that stands out (as far as putting forth effort)."

Nicholson's Mt. Tabor team is 7-0, but he said they are not looking ahead to the state playoffs.

"We're just taking it one game at a time right now. You can't take any team to lightly."
