Academy Invit: Ndudi Ebi, Game 1

HOUSTON, TEXAS -- Westbury Christian (TX) and junior North Carolina recruit, Ndudi Ebi (IN dee EE bee) opened play in the 2001 Academy Invitational Tournament with a 73 - 50 victory over Texas City (TX) on Thursday at the Aldine Campbell Center in Houston, TX.

Ebi and teammate Ugo Ihekweazu led the way for Westbury with 16 and 17 points, respectively. Ebi struck for a double double as he also grabbed 12 defensive rebounds, blocked five shots and stole the ball twice. Lucian Graham added 15 and Paul Connolly chipped in another 11 points.

Ebi is ranked as "the second-best Class of 2003 prospect in the Lone Star State—behind only Beaumont Ozen giant Kendrick Perkins... Rob Harrington's Prep Stars Recruiter's Handbook puts him at No. 34 in the country."

Showcasing extreme agility and quick feet on defense, the 6-10 post player, Ndudi, played the frontcourt of Westbury's agressive zone press, going after Texas City early and rocking them back on their heels. His long wingspan and play on defense clearly helped control the pace of the game, altering passes and hounding their offense.

Coach Greg Glen of Westbury Christian, in a postgame press conference, said that "I thought that maybe we surprised them by putting a little zone press out there, keeping them with their brakes on and I thought that it surprised them a little bit. I was just glad. It seemed like our kids were more prepared in that situation and I thought our kids did a good job of attacking when they did."

Perhaps the most telling stat for the game was Westbury's white hot 61% shooting while limiting Texas City to just 33%. And, despite the large margin of victory and outrebounding Texas City 30 - 18, Westbury was its own worst enemy with poor protection of the ball (24 turnovers and 17 steals by Texas City.)

Texas City was led by Jonathon Burnett with a game high 22 points. Teammate Dion Dowell scored ten points and pulled down 10 rebounds.

Westbury Christian advances into the championship bracket and will face the winner of the Cypress Springs (TX) – Aldine Nimitz (TX) matchup on Friday at 4:00 p.m. Texas City will face the loser of that same game on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m.
