Academy Invit: Kendrick Perkins, Game 1

HOUSTON, TEXAS -- In the marquis matchup of the evening, Rice (NY) and 7-2 Shagari Alleyne defeated Beaumont and 6-10 star junior Kendrick Perkins 68 - 51 as both teams played their first game in the 2001 Academy Invitational Tournament at the Aldine Campbell Center in Houston, TX.

Rice (NY) defeats Beaumont Ozen (TX) 68 - 51

It had been expected to be a battle of titans but the game was decided below the rim by penetrating, slashing guard play and thievery by Rice (20 steals). "Coach Hicks of Rice has been known to put five guards on the floor… His teams use quickness, penetrating abilities and timely perimeter shot-making to win," says the press guide.

Though Beaumont came out very strong and raced to a ten point lead, the final score isn't indicative of how thoroughly Rice dominated the rest of the game. Rice faced a 20 – 10 deficit but, over the next eleven and a half minutes, the Raiders outcored the Panthers 38 – 5 to explode into the lead.

As for the big men, both Perkins and Alleyne were marginalized by Rice's game strategy. Kendrick showed great polish on the offensive end with several magnificent spin moves and he still got his points, with 17. He also snared five boards but committed six turnovers. Shagari contributed nine points and only one rebound for Rice.

Playing essentially a center and four guards, Rice came at Beaumont in lightning waves. For Rice, it was 5-9 guard Keydren Clark: 18 points, five steals and four assists; 6-2 guard Russell Robinson: 12 points, four steals, three assists and six rebounds; 6-4 guard Christian Brown: 11 points, six rebounds; 6-1 guard Kenneth Eusey: nine points and four rebounds; 6-1 guard Jason Wingate: six points and six assists; Steven Burtt, Jr.: five steals.

Rice moves on to the championship bracket, facing North Carolina target Trevor Ariza and his Westchester Comets on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Beaumont and North Carolina recruit Kendrick Perkins will face Louisville, Kentucky's Male HS at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
