"I committed today," says the do-it-all athlete affectionately known as "Cooter". "I committed to UNC. I knew that there I had a better chance of playing and having a good education."

James Arnold says those two key aspects broke the tie between the Demon Deacs and the Tar Heels. After making his decision, he called North Carolina this afternoon.

"I called Coach [John] Bunting, but Coach [Marvin] Sanders -- and their were two other coaches in there -- he put me on speaker phone and had me tell them why I was calling. They were just excited and everything, and they can't wait."

The 5-foot-11, 180 pounder has yet to set up an official visit to North Carolina, and becomes the first of two expected running backs for the Tar Heels to sign this year.
