"We will certainly have our work cut out for us against one of the top programs in the history of college basketball. This is a game our players and fans have looked forward to since we added it to our schedule and we are excited to be a part of such a class event as the Pete Newell Challenge. Obviously we now have a few games under our belt and know a little more about our team that we did a couple of weeks ago. North Carolina will be playing its opener, but I suspect Roy Williams will have his team ready to play." -- SCU head coach Dick Davey
"They're going to be good – you just know a team like that is going to be good. Steve Nash played there. Nobody knew about him and he turned into an NBA all-star. You know they produce good players, and my prediction is they're going to be physical and tough mentally. As long as we go out there with the same preparation that we've had every day in practice, we'll be fine." -- UNC junior Sean May
Last Season: After a season of ups and downs (with an 16-16 record), Santa Clara finally realized its potential in a thrilling one-point loss to No. 4 Gonzaga in the WCC semifinals on national television.
This Season To Date: The Broncos have already played three regular season games, courtesy of the NABC Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. They defeated Duquesne, 74-65, in the opener. In the second outing, however, SCU surrended 20 three-pointers and were routed by New Mexico, 93-59. The Broncos wrapped up the tourney by cruising past NC A&T, 90-52.
Backcourt Duo: Senior guards Kyle Bailey and Doron Perkins (both hail from Alaska) form one of the better backcourts on the West Coast and are the team's top returning scorers from a year ago. Bailey (9.3 ppg, 5.0 apg) plays more of a steady point guard role, while Perkins (12.7 ppg, 6.3 reb) can light up the scoreboard, as he did with 24 points in the season opener.
