UNC Awaits Word on Tire Bowl; Clemson Won't Accept

Clemson University officials announced today that it will not accept a bid for its football team to play in a post-season bowl, as a self-inflicted sanction for Saturday's on the field melee with South Carolina. This leaves North Carolina as the prime candidate for the Tire Bowl.

The Tar Heels are almost certainly down to two bowl options -- the Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. on Dec. 30 or the MPC Computers Bowl in Boise, Idaho on Dec 27.

A release from Tire Bowl media relations Monday evening states:

"We will be meeting with our selection committee tonight and plan on making an announcement tomorrow as to our selection for the ACC representative in this year's Continental Tire Bowl," said Will Webb, executive director of the Continental Tire Bowl.

"We regret not being able to consider Clemson as an option for our Bowl. However, we fully understand and respect the actions of the University. Going forward, Georgia Tech and North Carolina remain as possibilities for the Continental Tire Bowl," said Ken Haines, president and CEO of Raycom Sports.
