Manuel out vs. State; Capel "unlikely"

The hits just keep on coming for the 5-10 Tar Heels. Freshmen Jackie Manuel will not play in Wednesday's showdown with N.C. State, while senior Jason Capel is "unlikely," according to head coach Matt Doherty.

Doherty said today that Manuel has a stress fracture in his left foot that will sideline him for tomorrow's night's game.

"Jackie Manuel developed a stress fracture and he will not be able to play on Wednesday," Doherty said. "He has a stress fracture, I think, in the third metatarsal."

Manuel has averaged 6.1 points and 3.7 boards in 22.5 minutes and is a key defensive presence for the Tar Heels.

Doherty said Capel, who hasn't practiced since he suffered a concussion in practice a week ago, will not practice today.

"I don't know if Jason Capel will be available," Doherty said. "He gets tested on a daily basis. We hope we have Jason, but it might be unlikely."

Capel is averaging 16.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists and leads the Tar Heels in 14 statistical categories, including minutes played, field goals, field goal attempts, free throws, free throw attempts, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, assists, steals, points and scoring average. No Carolina player has led the team in scoring, rebounding and assists since UNC recorded assist leaders in 1968-69.
