Melvin Weighing Options

It's been nearly 10 months since Marquis Melvin decided to commit to Duke. That was supposed to be the end of the recruiting process for the Whiteville (N.C.) safety ranked No. 21 in the state. Sure, the North Carolina coaches kept in touch, but Melvin still planned on signing with Duke in February. However, that is no longer a sure thing.

"Everything is still set as it is," explained Melvin. "Right now I'm going to Duke, but my options are open and that's basically it. There are some reasons [for opening up my options], but I rather not explain."

Although Melvin wouldn't go into detail about his recent decision to open up his recruitment, sources close to the situation report that this development is because of a holdup with Duke admissions – though Melvin would not confirm this.

While Melvin has spoken glowingly of the Tar Heels recently, Duke is his lone scholarship offer to date. If the North Carolina coaching staff decided to offer the three-star recruit, things could get interesting.

"I'm not sure," remarked Melvin in regards to what would happen if UNC offered. "I don't want to put my foot in my mouth, but I don't know. I'm just stating right now my options are open."

Melvin said he is in constant contact with members of the Blue Devils' coaching staff, and will visit the Durham campus this weekend, but has not communicated with the Carolina coaches in several weeks.

"I talk to Duke's [coaches] often," he said. "I really don't talk to Carolina's [coaches] that much -- right now they have [stopped calling]."
