2006: Norman Whitley

When Tar Heel fans hear of the school Richmond Senior, one word jumps to mind: "Rabbit" as in Michael "Rabbit" Waddell, former North Carolina cornerback and returner who was recruited out of the Rockingham, N.C. school in 1999.

For the recruiting class of 2006 a new prospect is emerging from the Richmond Senior program in Norman Whitley. With the help of Waddell, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound tailback is being recruited by the North Carolina coaching staff hoping to continue the pipeline to the talent rich high school.

"I've been hearing more from the Tar Heels as far as letter wise and ‘Rabbit' – Michael Waddell of the Tennessee Titans – me and him we have talked a lot," explained Whitley. "Rabbit has been through the program and at a higher level now so he knows a lot of things that happen at the college level and he tries to teach things to me."

One lesson Waddell has already taught Whitley is to go through the recruiting process with an open mind and choose a school based on his own needs and not others. Thus far Whitley, who is also being recruited by Clemson, Wake Forest, Oregon, Tennessee, Virginia, Nebraska, and UCLA, has taken his advice.

"I'm just trying to be open to everybody," remarked Whitley. "I don't want to pin-point one college right now; I just want to keep my options open."

Whitley will get a better look at Chapel Hill on March 6th when he unofficially visits North Carolina for Junior Day.

While Waddell owns countless receiving and returning records at Richmond Senior, with just one season as a starter, Whitley's name dominates the school's record book in most rushing categories. Last season, Whitley rushed 290 times for a record 2,666 yards and 33 touchdowns.
