2006: Matt Woodlief

With the need to sign an inside linebacker for their class of 2006, the North Carolina coaching staff has began to recruit 5-foot-10, 230-pound linebacker Matt Woodlief of Catawba (N.C.) Bandys.

"They've been sending me a lot of information," stated Woodlief. "It's a good school. They have a good football program. I'm going up there this Saturday for a Junior Day."

Although North Carolina's location will work in their favor, ACC rivals Wake Forest and Virginia Tech already have a slight lead in these early stages of his recruitment.

Regardless, Woodlief doesn't figure to make a verbal commitment until – at the earliest – September.

"Me and my parents have been talking about committing in September or October," explained Woodlief. "Or I might just wait until a year from now."

If the Tar Heels' coaching staff is able to steal Woodlief's February signature they will add a hardnosed inside linebacker to their 2006 recruiting class.

"Great instincts, Woodlief has a true nose for the football and does well in traffic to shed blocks," commented Scout.com recruiting Analyst Miller Safrit. "A heady player, who uses his mind to make plays."

On his way to leading Bandys High School to the 2A State semi-finals, Woodlief recorded 151 tackles and eight sacks.
