Latta coasts to region title

On the strength of Raymond Felton's triple-double Tuesday night, Latta High School clinched at least a share of South Carolina's Region 8A title with three regional games left to play.

Felton scored 27 points on 56 percent shooting, grabbed 12 rebounds and handed out ten assists as Latta claimed its sixth straight regional title. Carolina's super recruit also added two blocks and four steals to the winning effort.

Latta jumped out to an early, insurmountable lead and dominated the overmatched Green Sea Floyd's team in every aspect of the game. Felton scored sixteen points in the first half and then eleven in the second, playing only 26 minutes.

The score by quarter in last night's game was:

 Q-1 Q-2 Q-3 Q-4
20-2	50-19	70-31	84-50
In between classes Wednesday, Felton graciously gave Inside Carolina a few moments and talked about the win and the coming postseason. Concerning the regional title, Raymond Felton commented, "It's another goal accomplished. We're going on now to greater things."

When asked who will be Latta's main competition in postseason play, Felton said, "The talk is, Hemingway [SC] matches up good with us. We'll see when the time comes."

On Friday night (2/8), Latta faces Hannah Pamplico at home, whom they defeated 97-76 in an earlier meeting. Remaining games for Latta after Hannah Pamplico are: AWAY - Britton's Neck (2/12) and HOME – Lake View (2/14). All game times are at 6:00 p.m.

The Felton Watch:
Ever the team player, Felton seems most concerned with team honors in the state of South Carolina, hoping to win the State 1A title again as they did last year. But to accomplish the individual scoring record at Latta would be sweet for Felton's energized home town.

Felton's 27 points in last night's victory over Green Sea Floyd's brings his career total to 2,602 points. He is now within 93 points of breaking the all-time South Carolina career points record of 2,695, set by Hartsville's (SC) Roderick Blakeney from 1990 - 1994. With three remaining games before postseason play begins, Felton needs to average 31 points/game in order to tie the mark during Latta's last regular season game at home on 2/14, certainly well within his capabilities.

Latta's first two playoff games will be played with home court advantage at Latta, and Felton will have the opportunity to break the scoring record there. Games three and four of the playoffs will then move to neutral courts, with the finals being played in Columbia, SC.
