Heels High Up On Burney's List

Kendrick Burney of Jacksonville (N.C.) Southwest Onslow received a scholarship from North Carolina earlier this year. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound athlete isn't ready to name any favorites, but he admits North Carolina is definitely high on his list.

"Carolina is on a real good up rise," said Burney. "I like Coach [John] Bunting and the staff there, they're real good people. The players have welcomed me in. So it's a real good school."

Burney is quite familiar with North Carolina's campus. The true athlete has attended both of the Tar Heels' junior days, as well as making regular visits to Chapel Hill to see friends.

"I've been up there a for a football game," said Burney. "Also I have friends that go to college there so I've been visiting the campus off and on. It's a great place, the way the people treat you there, the atmosphere is unbelievable."

Burney's next trip to Chapel Hill should be this summer when the athlete plans to strut his stuff during the Tar Heels' summer camp.

Burney is "Mr. Everything" for the back-to-back NCHSAA 2A State Champions Southwest Onslow. From his quarterback position, Burney completed 26-of-56 passes for 521 yards and seven touchdowns with only two interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 920 yards and 14 touchdowns on just 124 rushes.

From his defensive back position – his most likely collegiate position – Burney recorded 92 tackles (25 solo) including six tackles for a loss. He also deflected seven passes and intercepted five others.

Burney also returns kicks and punt where he returned two kicks for touchdowns.
